Our tree Initiative in the News

Jill Colvyn, a journalist from DNAInfo, wrote an article about our initiative to plant more trees in the neighborhood.  Here is a link to Jill's article Midtown Block Pushing for More Trees.

Letter from the President, July 2011

As many of you know, one of the most pressing issues of our neighborhood is the cleanliness of our streets, particularly on West 56th Street.  I have recently talked to the residents from West 56th Street to come up with potential solutions, and I wanted to share my thoughts, as they pertain to a key factor in creating change – community residents, owners and landlords, stores and restaurants and politicians collaborating to improve our neighborhood.

How do I make a noise complaint?

Some of our neighbors have been very effective at curbing excessive noise on the streets.  After speaking to them about their tactics, it is clear that persistence is key.  You simply must log a complaint with 311 and contact the managers or owners of the entity or equipment that is making noise.  All construction crews must display the contact information of the construction manager.  To log a complaint, you can call 311 or file it online with the New York City 311.

For an immediate noise problem (if it's not a police emergency), please call Midtown North Precinct, our local precinct, tel. (212) 767-8400.

Privately Owned Public Spaces (POPS)

Following the success of our May 18, 2011 party outside the Remi Restaurant in the West 53-54th Street arcade, a few people were curious about how Privately Owned Public Spaces (POPS) operate. Do they belong to the public or to the building owners? How long are they supposed to be open? Can I have a party there?

City Considering Mid-Block Crossings to Connect Midtown Pedestrian Passageways

The city's Department of Transportation has agreed to explore adding a mid-block crossing to a busy Midtown street amidst a growing push from locals to make a little-known network of pedestrian plazas more accessible. Spokeswoman Nicole Garcia said the agency plans to study adding a crossing to West 57th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues and is also open to examining the impact of adding crossings on other streets in the area.
